Getting a Good Night's Sleep
According to HealthDay, here are some tips to getting a
good night's rest from the Nemours Foundation:
1. Avoid big meals and beverages (especially caffeine)
several hours before bed.
2. Put yourself on a sleep schedule: Wake and go to bed at
the same time each day.
3. Avoid excercise before bed. Instead, relax with a warm
bath.
4. Take plenty of calcium to avoid leg cramps.
5. Take a childbirth class if you are feeling anxiety about
your birth.

Prenatal Vitamins Cut Childhood Cancers
A University of Toronto study has shown that taking a
multi-vitamin before and in early pregnancy reduced the
risk of childhood leukemia by 36%. It was also associated
with a 47% reduced risk of neuroblastoma (a nervous system
cancer) and reduced the risk of childhood brain tumors by
27%. The research did not indicate which constituent is
behind the reduction, but they suspect folic acid may have
some part in it.

Morning Sickness and Breast Cancer
Good news about morning sickness? Yes, apparently!
According to a study at the University of Buffalo, women
who experience nausea and vomiting during pregnancy may
have a lower risk for breast cancer later in life. Women
with this condition had about a 30% reduced risk of the
disease.

UNICEF Says: Decline in Breastfeeding Linked to Deaths
About 160,000 die each year in Eastern and Southeastern
Asia die annually due to a decline in breastfeeding in the
region. These deaths are "imminently correctable" says the
WHO and UNICEF advisor, Stephen Atwood. THe WHO warns that
babies who are breastfed less than five months are at much
greater risk of developing pneumonia and diarrhea, which
are often deadly in developing countries.

Moms and Tots:

First Borns are Smarter!
(Good news for me!)
According to an article in the New York Times, June 22, the
eldest children in the family tend to develope higher IQ's
than their siblings. The difference was about 3 points,
which is slight, but significant. It is often the tipping
point between a high B and a low A average or admission to
certain colleges.

Early Antibiotic Use and Asthma
A report in the journal, Chest, reports that the use of
commonly prescribed "broad-spectrum" antibiotics during
infancy was associated with a 46% increase in asthma risk
by age seven.

Stuff We Found:

Kleenex will design your own box! Go to
mykleenextissue.com and design your own Kleenex box using
online tools. So cute!

Love a great handbag? I found the cutest purses, totes,
and accessories at Nifty Things, 144 River St. in Elk
Rapids. They're called Saraye, Tatami Purses of Cambodia.
They're all made from tall grass of the Mekong River in
Cambodia. They're adorable, strong, and affordable
(between $20 and $40!) They come in a variety of colors,
patterns and shapes. If you don't want a purse, try a
beach mat or some placemats with matching coasters. Check
them out at saraye.com.
